PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – In a stunning display of endurance and passion for music, Trinidadian artist Joshua Regrello has shattered the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous steelpan performance, playing the national instrument for an astonishing 31 hours.
Starting his monumental feat at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, the 27-year-old Regrello captivated audiences from around the globe with his rendition of Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up,” setting an initial goal of 30 hours. However, driven by the overwhelming support from thousands of online viewers on platforms like YouTube and Facebook, he extended his performance by an additional hour, ultimately securing the record.
Throughout the marathon session, Regrello was not alone on stage. He was joined by a diverse group of musicians, including vocalists and instrumentalists, who contributed to the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere of the event. Despite the grueling schedule, Regrello managed to minimize his breaks, taking only half an hour in total compared to the allotted five minutes per hour, even occasionally playing with one hand to quickly hydrate or grab a snack.
In the final moments of his record-breaking performance, Regrello invited the live studio audience to rise as he honored Trinidad and Tobago by playing the national anthem, marking a triumphant conclusion to his historic achievement.
Expressing his gratitude, Regrello acknowledged the collective effort that made this milestone possible. “This achievement belongs not only to me but to everyone involved—from the meticulous planning stages to the unwavering support on the ground,” he shared during a brief address at WACK 90.1FM’s San Fernando studio, where the record was officially recognized.
He extended special thanks to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Fire Service, and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation for providing dedicated timekeepers and independent witnesses essential for the Guinness verification process. Regrello highlighted the challenges faced by these volunteers, especially given the short notice during the Christmas season, and commended their commitment to ensuring the authenticity of the record.
This remarkable accomplishment follows Regrello’s recent feat of being the first individual to perform the steelpan on the Great Wall of China, further cementing his reputation as a pioneering musician dedicated to showcasing the cultural richness of Trinidad and Tobago on the world stage.
Joshua Regrello’s record-breaking steelpan marathon not only highlights his personal dedication but also serves as a celebration of Trinidad’s national instrument, inspiring both local and international audiences with the vibrant sounds and resilient spirit of the steelpan community.
