A man believed to be missing has been identified as one of two individuals killed during a late-night police operation in rural Hanover.
The deceased, 27-year-old Christopher Williams from Strathbogie, Westmoreland, had been reported missing just a day before the incident. Police say the fatal encounter unfolded around 11:55 p.m. on Thursday in the usually quiet community of Cauldwell, Kingsvale.
During the operation, lawmen reportedly came under fire and returned it. Two men were fatally shot in the exchange. Officers say they recovered two firearms on the scene — a Browning pistol with two 9mm rounds and a Smith & Wesson with a loaded .45 magazine.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and the police oversight arm, IPROB, have both opened investigations to determine the events that led to the deadly outcome.
Williams’ name had been circulated as a missing person just hours prior to the incident, raising new questions around his disappearance and the circumstances of his death.
