The committal hearing for Shamoya Green, the St. James woman facing charges related to the death of her five-month-old daughter, has been postponed to September 30. This hearing is necessary to facilitate the case’s transfer to the St. James Circuit Court.
Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton announced the new date during a session in the St. James Parish Court on Thursday. It was revealed that the case was not fully prepared for transfer due to an outstanding assessor’s report concerning a child witness who was reportedly present during the incident. This report is crucial in determining the child’s readiness to testify.
At the previous court appearance on September 4, an updated medical assessment from July 22, 2024, indicated that Green was unfit to plead, citing a seizure disorder accompanied by psychosis resulting from her seizures. Consequently, Green, who is currently held at the South Camp Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston, will attend the upcoming court session virtually via Zoom.
The complexities of Green’s mental health issues surfaced during her initial court appearance on March 6, 2024, when she expressed distress, claiming to hear voices from her children. She also collapsed in the dock and required medical assistance. Following this incident, the court mandated a psychiatric evaluation.
The tragic incident occurred on December 6, 2023, at approximately 5:35 PM, when Green, in the presence of her common-law husband and family members, sought to discuss their relationship. After her partner declined to talk at that moment, Green reportedly became agitated, exited the room with the baby, and threw her off the roof onto the concrete yard below.
Green was charged with murder on February 24, 2024. The upcoming hearing will continue to explore the circumstances surrounding this distressing case and assess the necessary legal proceedings.
