MANCHESTER, Jamaica — A 38-year-old man from Ewarton, St. Catherine, has been sentenced to 22 months in prison or fined over J$1 million after pleading guilty to possession and trafficking of illegal drugs in the Manchester Parish Court on Monday, September 23.
The man, identified as Mahon Davis, was arrested following a drug bust during an operation led by the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) on July 25. Law enforcement officers found two kilograms of cocaine and 12 pounds of ganja concealed in Davis’ vehicle during a routine stop.
According to police reports, Davis was driving a Toyota Axio with a female passenger when officers from the FNID signaled him to pull over. Upon conducting a search of the vehicle, authorities discovered two garbage bags filled with ganja in the trunk and one kilogram of cocaine hidden behind the glove compartment. A second kilogram of cocaine was found concealed in another part of the car.
Both Davis and the female passenger were initially taken into custody, but after further investigation, the woman was released without charge. Davis was subsequently charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act for possession and trafficking of cocaine and ganja.
In court, Davis was handed the following sentences:
- Six months imprisonment or a fine of J$15,000 for possession of ganja.
- Six months imprisonment or a fine of J$105,816 for trafficking ganja.
- Six months imprisonment or a fine of J$500,000 for possession of cocaine.
- Four months suspended sentence for two years or a fine of J$500,000 for trafficking cocaine.
If Davis fails to pay the fines, the prison sentences will run concurrently.
Additionally, Davis is scheduled to appear before the Manchester Circuit Court on January 23, 2025, for an asset forfeiture hearing, where authorities will seek to recover proceeds believed to be gained from his illegal activities.
This sentencing serves as a reminder of law enforcement’s continued efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and the illegal narcotics trade across Jamaica.
