NEW YORK — Detectives in the Bronx are piecing together what they describe as a domestic-violence case after 40-year-old Tamara Rowe, a Jamaican national and former Gleaner employee, was found mortally wounded inside her Wakefield apartment late Saturday.
What investigators know so far
- Officers responding to a 911 call around 11 p.m. discovered Rowe on the sixth floor of 667 East 232nd Street with stab wounds to her chest and right arm. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but could not be revived.
- Surveillance footage reportedly captured a man sprinting from the building moments after the attack, according to the building’s superintendent.
- Police sources say the incident appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute; investigators have sought a warrant to seize mobile phones from the apartment for forensic review.
Family left reeling
Rowe leaves behind two children, ages two and ten. The younger child was inside the apartment during the assault but was unharmed, neighbors told reporters.
Person of interest
Rowe shared the residence with the children’s father, who has not been seen since the attack. While the NYPD has not formally labeled him a suspect, detectives are eager to interview him.
A life uprooted
Friends say Rowe emigrated from Jamaica roughly three years ago in search of better opportunities. Those close to her remember a devoted mother balancing work and parenting in a new country.
Next steps
Crime-scene officers spent Monday combing the apartment for evidence. Anyone with information is urged to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not announced any arrests.
