CAS Postpones Decision on Clunis Dispute Until Monday

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) Ad Hoc Division has announced that it will deliver a ruling on the dispute concerning national hammer thrower Nayoka Clunis’ eligibility for the Paris Olympics on Monday.

Clunis was excluded from Jamaica’s athletics team for the upcoming Paris Games due to an oversight by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), which failed to include her name on the updated athlete roster submitted to World Athletics, the sport’s global governing body.

The JAAA attributed the omission to power and internet outages caused by Hurricane Beryl.

After receiving no updates from the JAAA regarding her status as of July 7, Clunis filed an appeal with CAS on Wednesday.

Although CAS initially indicated that a decision would be made by Sunday, the Ad Hoc Division, which convened on Saturday, has determined that additional time is necessary. The ruling is now expected by 5:00 am Jamaica time on Monday.

Representatives at the hearing included Ben Cisneros for the JAAA, King’s Counsel Ian Wilkinson for the Jamaica Olympic Association, Catherine Pitre for World Athletics, and Antonio Rigozzi for the International Olympic Committee. Clunis is represented by Dr. Emir Crowne, Matthew Gayle, and Sayeed Bernard.

Clunis, aiming to make her Olympic debut, would also mark Jamaica’s return to the hammer throw event since Rio 2016.
