MONTEGO BAY, St James — Sangster International Airport (SIA), managed by MBJ Airports Ltd, is set to enhance the passenger experience by integrating advanced biometric technologies for departing travelers starting in 2025.
Shane Munroe, CEO of MBJ Airports Ltd, emphasized the initiative’s primary objective during the recent annual MBJ Airport Forum. “Our focus is on streamlining the journey for the millions who transit through our airport each year. By incorporating biometric verification at departure, alongside our existing mobile check-in services, we aim to significantly reduce processing times,” Munroe explained.
This initiative follows the successful deployment of biometric systems for arriving passengers two years ago. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the necessity of minimizing physical interactions within airport processes, further validating the adoption of such technologies.
Munroe highlighted the anticipated reduction in wait times as a key benefit. “Our experience with biometric systems for arrivals has been promising. Extending this to departures is expected to yield similar efficiencies, allowing passengers to navigate the airport more swiftly,” he noted.
While a definitive launch date for departing passenger biometrics remains tentative, sources indicate implementation could commence early next year. The integration will feature e-gates at security checkpoints, replacing traditional passport control, and biometric boarding processes at gates.
In addition to passenger processing enhancements, MBJ Airports Ltd is upgrading baggage handling systems. “We are introducing self-service bag drops in collaboration with key airline partners. This will enable passengers to deposit their luggage quickly and independently, reducing overall time spent at the airport,” Munroe added.
For those preferring conventional check-in methods, the airport has expanded its infrastructure. “We’ve increased our check-in counters by 20% compared to last year, ensuring ample space and reducing congestion during peak times,” Munroe stated.
SIA has been undergoing a comprehensive US$200-million upgrade since 2022. Among the latest developments, Munroe announced the near completion of an innovative air/sea lounge. This facility is designed to facilitate smooth transfers for passengers connecting to cruise ships, alleviating congestion in the arrivals area.
“The dedicated space for cruise passengers will streamline their immigration and customs processing, directing them efficiently to buses that transport them directly to the cruise ship piers,” Munroe explained.
Infrastructure improvements extend beyond passenger processing. A new roadway from Godfrey Dyer Boulevard is under construction, aimed at reducing traffic congestion around the airport. “This new intersection will divert traffic away from the main roundabout, easing access to both departures and arrivals,” Munroe detailed. Completion is expected by 2025.
Additionally, a new gas station will be established at the airport, replacing the previous facility displaced by ongoing upgrades. “We have secured a license for a new service station in that area, ensuring continued convenience for travelers,” Munroe assured.
Further enhancements include relocating car rental services and the Knutsford Express, alongside the introduction of fully automated parking facilities. These upgrades are part of a long-term plan to continually improve the airport’s infrastructure and passenger services over the coming years.
With these comprehensive advancements, Sangster International Airport aims to set a new standard in efficiency and passenger satisfaction, positioning itself as a leading hub in the Caribbean.
