The Lowell F. Hawthorne Foundation celebrated its third annual fundraising gala on November 14, 2024, at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, New York. The event was a tribute to the late Lowell Hawthorne, the visionary co-founder of Golden Krust Caribbean Restaurant, whose legacy continues to inspire the community. Gathering members of the Jamaican diaspora alongside community leaders, the gala underscored the Foundation’s ongoing mission to support education for underserved students in the Caribbean and the United States.
Founded by Lowell’s widow, Lorna Hawthorne, in 2017, the Foundation has remained a beacon for those struggling with the financial burdens of higher education. “Lowell was always passionate about the power of education to uplift individuals and communities,” said Mrs. Hawthorne. “This Foundation is a living tribute to his belief that education should be accessible to all.”
This year’s gala not only raised critical funds but also celebrated the accomplishments of those dedicated to making a difference. Previous events have raised over $200,000, and the 2024 gala saw an outpouring of generosity, with guests participating in raffles and a silent auction to help fund the Foundation’s scholarships.
Recognizing Impactful Leaders
In keeping with the spirit of community and leadership, the evening honored four exceptional individuals whose work aligns with the Foundation’s mission:
- Dr. Melvin I. Douglass, recipient of the Educator Leadership Award, for his mentorship of at-risk youth through the Cave Whiteman Scholarship Programme.
- Velma Hawthorne, honored with the Philanthropic Impact Award, for her tireless dedication to community service and furthering the Foundation’s objectives.
- Dr. Reginald E. Manning, who received the Community Leadership Award for his groundbreaking work in healthcare and education, including co-founding the Borough of Brooklyn Center for Arts & Technology.
- Christopher Williams, presented with the Business Leadership Award for his transformative role in the Caribbean financial sector and as co-founder of the PROVEN Group.
A Legacy of Visionary Leadership
Lowell Hawthorne’s journey from humble beginnings in rural Jamaica to establishing Golden Krust, the largest Jamaican-owned business in the U.S., is a testament to his commitment to education and community. Since its founding in 1989, Golden Krust has expanded to over 100 locations across nine states, creating jobs and opportunities for countless individuals.
“Lowell firmly believed that the future of our communities depended on the education of our youth,” Mrs. Hawthorne reflected. “The Foundation continues his work by ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of a student’s success.”
The gala was not just a fundraising event but a celebration of a man whose vision continues to transform lives. With the Foundation’s unwavering support, the next generation of leaders will have the opportunity to pursue their dreams, empowered by the gift of education. Through this legacy, Lowell Hawthorne’s impact will resonate for generations to come.
