ST MARY, Jamaica — Police have charged 39-year-old Omar Malcolm from Lewisburg district in connection with a house fire that tragically killed a 65-year-old woman in Richmond, St Mary, earlier this month.

The victim, Desrine Malcolm of Cane Heap in Richmond, was found dead in her home after a blaze broke out on the morning of September 3. At approximately 9:30 am, neighbors noticed smoke and flames coming from the residence and immediately notified emergency services. Firefighters responded to the scene, battling the fire until it was safely extinguished. Once the area was deemed secure, first responders discovered the charred remains of the elderly woman amid the debris.

Investigators processed the scene, and Desrine’s body was transported to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.

On Monday, October 14, police detained Omar Malcolm, who later underwent a question-and-answer session with his attorney. Following this session, authorities formally charged him on Wednesday, October 23. Malcolm is now awaiting a court date, which is in the process of being scheduled.
