Cavalier SC began their defense of the Jamaica Premier League title with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Portmore United at Sabina Park on Sunday. Despite falling behind early in the match, the reigning champions showed resilience to secure all three points.
Portmore United, who had defeated Cavalier twice last season, struck first in the 19th minute when Tarick Ximines found the back of the net. Cavalier, however, responded swiftly, with Jalmaro Calvin leveling the score in the 25th minute. The match remained deadlocked until the 60th minute when an unfortunate own goal by Akeem Mullings handed Cavalier the lead, which they held onto for the win.
In other action, Vere United secured their first win of the season by defeating Molynes United 3-1. After suffering a loss to Montego Bay United in their opener, Vere wasted no time taking control, with Roshawn Oldfield scoring the opening goal in the 11th minute. Molynes United quickly responded, with Jeremy Nelson equalizing in the 13th minute. However, Vere regained their advantage just over 10 minutes later when Denzel McKenzie scored in the 25th minute, and Romarion Thomas sealed the victory with a late goal deep into stoppage time.
Meanwhile, newly promoted Racing United celebrated their first-ever Jamaica Premier League win with a 1-0 victory over Dunbeholden FC. Mikyle Williams scored the decisive goal in the 40th minute, helping Racing United bounce back after their narrow opening-game loss to Waterhouse FC.
The final match of the day saw Humble Lion and Tivoli Gardens play to a 0-0 draw, with both sides failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
With the season now underway, fans can expect more intense competition as teams vie for early momentum in the race for the title.
