KINGSTON, Jamaica — Matthew Peter Samuda, Jamaica’s newest Member of Parliament (MP), was officially sworn in on Tuesday afternoon at Gordon House. Representing the constituency of St Ann North Eastern, Samuda took the Oath of Allegiance at approximately 2:11 pm, marking the beginning of his term in the House of Representatives.
Samuda was welcomed by both Leader of Government Business Edmund Bartlett and Leader of Opposition Business Phillip Paulwell, who extended their congratulations. In his remarks, Samuda expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and emphasized his commitment to diligently representing the interests of his constituents.
The new MP also took a moment to acknowledge Marsha Smith, who previously held the seat before resigning last month. Her departure triggered the September 30 by-election, which saw Samuda securing victory and transitioning from his previous role as a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) representative in the Senate to now serving in the country’s legislature.
Samuda’s election to the House signals a fresh chapter for the St Ann North Eastern constituency, and he has pledged to work tirelessly on behalf of the people who entrusted him with their vote.
