WASHINGTON, United States — Vice President Kamala Harris has formally challenged former President Donald Trump to a debate ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Harris has accepted an invitation from CNN to participate in a debate scheduled for October 23, her campaign announced on Saturday.
“Vice President Harris is ready for another opportunity to share the stage with Donald Trump,” said Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’ campaign chair, in a statement. “The American people deserve another chance to hear from both Vice President Harris and Donald Trump before making their decision at the ballot box.”
The proposed debate would mark the third time Trump has debated during this election cycle, following a prior debate with Harris and an earlier face-off with President Joe Biden. Harris replaced Biden as the Democratic nominee after concerns over his debate performance and age mounted, leaving her to lead the ticket.
Trump, who has previously declined the idea of debating Harris again, has yet to respond to the latest invitation. The former president, now 78, had a shaky debate with Biden in June, which raised questions about the president’s ability to continue his campaign. Biden, at 81, has since stepped aside, putting Harris, 59, in a direct contest against Trump.
Political analysts largely declared Harris the winner of the previous debate held on September 10, where she demonstrated a sharp contrast to Trump’s approach. If Trump accepts the challenge, the upcoming debate could be a pivotal moment in the race as voters prepare to cast their ballots.
Both campaigns are now under intense scrutiny as the election approaches, with the potential debate serving as a critical opportunity for each candidate to outline their vision for the future of the United States.
