Authorities have recaptured eight out of nine inmates who broke out of the Constant Spring lock-up in the early hours of Tuesday. The group reportedly used makeshift tools to slice through a metal grille and door, slipping out before dawn.
The sole remaining fugitive is Alunzo Espute, 19, of Cassava Piece, Kingston. Espute, who was awaiting trial for murder, remains at large. Law enforcement is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings immediately.
Among those recently captured was Fray Messias, 18, accused of rape, who was tracked down in Stony Hill. The escape prompted a swift and coordinated response from police teams, who managed to round up the others within hours of the breakout.
Investigations are underway to determine how the men acquired tools and bypassed security protocols. Senior officials have promised a review of lock-up infrastructure and disciplinary action where necessary.
The escape has ignited public concern about safety lapses in the island’s detention system, particularly at smaller, urban lock-ups like Constant Spring. With one man still loose, the spotlight remains on law enforcement until the final fugitive is behind bars.
