ST. ANNE, Jamaica – Sterling United pulled off a dramatic 3-2 victory over rival team Black River SC in a fierce battle on Sunday, marking a powerful comeback in their Jamaica Football Federation Championship Group D encounter.
The match, played at St. Anne’s Sports Park, had everything: early goals, momentum swings, and a nail-biting finish. Black River SC opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a brilliant strike from attacker Kevin James, putting them ahead early. However, Sterling United quickly regrouped and equalized in the 22nd minute, thanks to a sharp finish from midfielder Jason Hall.
The first half continued with high-paced action, and just before the break, Black River SC regained the lead in the 41st minute, with a stunning free-kick from their captain, Andre Morgan. But Sterling United wasn’t backing down. They leveled the score once again in the 58th minute when forward Luke Parker slotted in a well-timed goal, following a perfectly executed corner kick.
The defining moment came in the 77th minute. With both teams locked at 2-2, Sterling United’s talisman, Michael Grant, scored what would be the game-winning goal, pouncing on a loose ball inside the box after a scramble off a set-piece. The crowd erupted, and despite a late surge from Black River SC, Sterling United held on for a crucial three points.
The victory lifted Sterling United to 18 points, propelling them into the playoff spots as they continue to close in on the top of Group D. Black River SC, despite the loss, remains in contention for the knockout rounds with 16 points, but will need to bounce back quickly to stay in the race.
