BELMOPAN, Belize – In a significant boost to its digital transformation agenda, Belize has secured a US$2 million grant from the European Union (EU) to enhance economic development through digital innovation. The funding supplements an existing US$10 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) dedicated to modernizing Belize’s digital landscape.
This initiative aligns with the Belizean government’s broader strategy to integrate technology into its economy, focusing on Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, Investment, Civil Aviation, and Immigration is spearheading the project, aiming to equip businesses with the tools necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Over 250 firms stand to benefit directly from this investment, with an emphasis on fostering technological adoption. Additionally, at least 20 individuals—half of whom are women—will receive specialized digital skills training through boot camps designed to enhance technological literacy and business innovation.
The EU’s contribution will facilitate initiatives that drive digital adoption across the private sector, enhance local capacity for innovation, and expand the use of digital financial services. MSMEs are expected to leverage these advancements to increase sales, streamline operations, and enhance information management through modern digital tools.
This partnership between the EU and IDB underscores a shared commitment to sustainable economic growth, with a particular focus on empowering women entrepreneurs and strengthening Belize’s position in the global digital economy. It also aligns with the broader Global Gateway Investment Agenda, which seeks to foster resilient and future-ready economies across Latin America and the Caribbean.
