SCARBOROUGH, Tobago – In a significant development, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley, declared his intention to step down from his position ahead of the official conclusion of his current term, which is slated to end by August this year.
During a press briefing on Friday, the 75-year-old Rowley shared that after dedicating 45 years to public service, he had always planned to retire from the political arena. “This weekend, my colleagues will be informed that I will not seek re-election in either Trinidad or Tobago. Four and a half decades in politics is a substantial commitment,” Rowley stated.
Expressing gratitude, Rowley acknowledged the support he has received over the years and hoped his contributions had positively influenced the nation. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has backed my efforts. It is my sincere hope that my work has left a beneficial mark on our country,” he added.
Although Rowley will remain at the helm of the People’s National Movement (PNM) as the party gears up for the upcoming general elections in August, he confirmed that he will not contest the Diego Martin West parliamentary seat, a position he has held since 1991.
“I will ensure a smooth transition for my colleagues and the party, making certain that no one is left unsupported. However, I will not be presenting myself as a candidate moving forward. Before the legal term concludes, I intend to resign and dedicate more time to my family,” Rowley concluded, bringing the press conference to a close.
