The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has announced a severe weather alert effective until 5 PM on Monday, November 4, 2024, due to the potential development of a tropical cyclone.
A report from the Met Office details a significant area of disturbed weather situated in the southwestern Caribbean Sea, north of Panama. This low-pressure system is anticipated to develop gradually, tracking northward and then shifting northwest over the next 24 to 36 hours.
There is a notable likelihood that this system will intensify into a tropical depression or storm, with forecasts indicating that it could be situated south of Jamaica by Monday morning. It is projected to then veer east before making its way northward, impacting Jamaica by Tuesday.
The Met Office has cautioned that regardless of the system’s development stage, it will usher in unsettled weather conditions across Jamaica starting Sunday night and continuing until Wednesday evening. Residents can expect overcast skies, with showers and thunderstorms that may become heavy at times. Additionally, strong gusty winds are likely to affect several parishes, particularly those in the eastern and south-central regions.
Fisherfolk operating in the cays and banks are strongly advised to prepare for potential evacuation and remain vigilant as conditions may change rapidly.
The Meteorological Service of Jamaica is committed to providing continuous updates as they closely monitor the evolving situation. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as weather conditions develop.
