Vere Phoenix United earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 triumph over Molynes United in the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League on Sunday. Playing at Sabina Park, the Clarendon-based team secured a much-needed victory, marking the first under the guidance of new co-owner and technical director Craig Butler and head coach Lenworth “Teacha” Hyde.

The match kicked off with intensity as Vere Phoenix took the lead early, courtesy of a stunning half-volley from Roshawn Oldfield in the 12th minute. The early advantage didn’t last long, however, as Molynes United quickly responded. Jermy Nelson found the equalizer just two minutes later, capitalizing on a rebound to level the score at 1-1.

But it was Vere Phoenix’s 17-year-old sensation, Denzel McKenzie, who restored their lead in the 25th minute with a composed finish, putting his team ahead 2-1. The young talent’s clinical goal stood out in a match where both sides displayed a determination to control the game.

Despite multiple chances in the second half, Molynes United couldn’t break through the solid defense of Vere Phoenix. The match was sealed in stoppage time when Romarion Thomas scored to make it 3-1, securing all three points for his team.

The win was a significant morale boost for Vere Phoenix, who suffered an opening defeat to Montego Bay United. With this victory, they move off the bottom of the table and look forward to building on this momentum in upcoming matches.
