KINGSTON, Jamaica – In a deeply troubling incident, a 57-year-old inmate, Patrick Perry, has died after suffering severe injuries reportedly sustained while in police custody. Perry, a resident of Long Bay in Portland, passed away at Kingston Public Hospital on Sunday morning, where he had been receiving treatment since September 21, 2024.
Sources reveal that Perry was discovered unresponsive in his cell two Saturdays ago, prompting his immediate transfer to Annotto Bay Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently moved to Kingston Public Hospital on the same day.
Medical examinations indicated that Perry had sustained serious injuries, including extensive damage to his ribs, lungs, and head, along with a significant laceration to his kidney. These findings suggested a violent beating, leading to his admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
The police have confirmed that the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified and is currently conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Perry’s injuries and subsequent death. This tragic incident has ignited renewed scrutiny over the treatment of inmates in police custody and the accountability of law enforcement agencies.
