National Commercial Bank (NCB) Financial Group Chairman, Michael Lee-Chin, has announced plans to significantly expand the bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) network across Jamaica, with the goal of improving access to banking services for all citizens.
Speaking in Westmoreland last Thursday, Lee-Chin emphasized the importance of ensuring that financial services are readily available across the island. “We need to ensure that all Jamaicans have access to financial services,” Lee-Chin stated. “We are not just going to be replacing machines. We want to make sure we are blanketing the country with ATMs.”
This expansion plan comes in response to various challenges faced by ATM networks in recent years, including incidents of vandalism, theft, and the closure of certain locations. Despite these hurdles, NCB remains committed to improving financial inclusion throughout Jamaica.
While Lee-Chin did not provide specific details, he acknowledged that there are still challenges to be addressed before the expansion becomes a reality. “There are some challenges that we have to work through, which we are now working through,” he added.
In March, reports indicated that NCB planned to roll out at least 50 additional ATMs in economically underserved areas. With NCB currently operating approximately 300 of the 824 ATMs across the island, this expansion will strengthen its position as the largest ATM provider in Jamaica, accounting for 36% of the total machines. Scotiabank follows closely with 35%, while Jamaica National holds 18%.
As NCB works to implement this ambitious initiative, the bank’s focus remains on bridging the financial access gap, ensuring that even the most remote communities in Jamaica can benefit from modern banking services.
