KINGSTON, Jamaica — As Hurricane Beryl approaches, Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett has intensified efforts by convening urgent meetings with the Tourism Emergency Operations Centre (TEOC) policy and planning group. The goal is to ensure the sector is well-prepared for any potential disruptions.
These meetings bring together ministry officials, chairpersons, and executive directors from various public bodies, including the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), alongside key private-sector tourism representatives.
The TEOC’s current focus includes verifying that hotels, Airbnbs, and tourist attractions adhere to robust hurricane preparedness protocols. The team is also coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety of both staff and tourists, setting up communication channels for timely updates, and liaising with airlines and cruise lines.
Additional measures involve stocking emergency supplies, securing facilities to prevent damage, and executing evacuation plans as needed. The team is ensuring that emergency contact details are readily accessible.
The tourism minister reassured that the situation will be monitored closely, with updates provided as necessary. He urged all tourism stakeholders to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines to safeguard lives and property.
