Congresswoman Jackson Lee, who diligently represented Texas’ 18th Congressional District since 1995, passed away at the age of 74 after bravely battling cancer.
In a heartfelt statement on Saturday, Bartlett praised Jackson Lee for her exceptional friendship and steadfast support for Jamaica throughout her career.
“Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was more than a distinguished American leader; she was a true ally of Jamaica. Her unwavering support for our country has been profoundly appreciated, leaving a lasting impact on our people and nation,” Bartlett remarked.
He continued, “Her relentless advocacy for civil rights, racial equality, and human rights, especially for women and children, has been exemplary. She fought valiantly on local, national, and international stages, achieving significant progress in the quest for justice and equality. Her role in enacting crucial legislation, including the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act and the George Floyd Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act, cements her legacy as a civil rights champion.”
Bartlett emphasized that Jackson Lee’s passing is a significant loss not only to the citizens of Texas and the United States but also to individuals worldwide who were inspired by her unwavering dedication and tireless efforts.
“Her remarkable contributions to the United States and her profound connection with Jamaica will be remembered with immense gratitude and respect. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging time,” he said.
